Glasgow Metropolitan College Phone Directory

As part of Alex Walker's long-term contract with Glasgow Metropolitan College, a new phone directory was build to enhance the redevelopment of their intranet.

Previously, if staff needed a colleague's phone number, they had to open up a large, alphabetical spreadsheet and find the person they were looking for. With this new application, Alex wanted to make this information very easy and quick to access.

A clean layout and a simple toolbar make the system easy to use. An auto-complete feature helps if you're not sure how to spell a name, and you can easily filter by department. It's also possible to generate a full, nicely formatted printable list of the entire college phone directory.

The context-sensitive toolbar shows relevant functions depending on where the user is, and makes it easy to get back to the search form with one click.

Alex also built a secure back-end, to make it easy for non-technical staff to add, edit and delete the records in the directory.

There may be times when staff have to update quite a few records, for example when a department moves across the college. The system was built to have a smooth workflow, making it quick and easy to get tasks done.

Notifications let the user know when updates are successful, when they (rarely) fail, and when the user cancels them. Warnings let users know when a record will be deleted, and the context-sensitive toolbar makes it easy to cancel any operation.

Ayr Baptist Church

Ayr Baptist Church already had a web site (not developed by Maylene). The previous site wasn't designed to handle non-technical people adding content. Over the years, new sections and pages had been added: the site had literally sprawled. As non-technical people tried to add content, usually in HTML pasted from Word, things had gotten inconsistent and the site was starting to creak and grown.

The church wanted a fresh new look that fitted with their image, and they also wanted a site that non-technical people could add to easily. They also wanted to have site 'editors': people who had the final say on what got posted on the site, and could edit content posted by others.

We built them a new site based on the blogging engine and Content Management System WordPress. To stop the sprawl of content that had affected their previous site, we split their content into two types:
